Walk & Talk · Exeter & East Devon

Therapy doesn’t always need a room

Walk & Talk takes our counselling session outdoors: the same confidential, person-centred work, side by side on quiet paths, at whatever pace feels right for you.

A quiet woodland path lined with bluebells, the kind of route used for Walk and Talk sessions.
A quiet woodland path in bluebell season

Walk & Talk is exactly what it sounds like: a counselling session that happens while we walk together. It is not a fitness activity, and there is nowhere we need to get to. The walking simply gives the conversation room to breathe.

“There is something about walking side by side that helps words find their way.”

The session is confidential, it lasts an hour, and it is led entirely by you. The only difference is that instead of two chairs in a room, we have a path and the open air.

Walk through it with me

  1. Before we set off

Everything begins with a free 15-minute conversation. We talk about what brings you here, and whether walking together feels like the right way to work. There is no pressure either way.

  2. The meeting point

We agree a quiet route in advance, somewhere across Exeter or East Devon that I know well, chosen for privacy and comfort. You can ask to avoid particular places, and I will make sure the meeting point is easy to find.

  3. As we walk

We walk side by side, at whatever pace suits you. This is counselling, not exercise: we can pause, sit on a bench, or turn back whenever you wish. The hour is yours, and it is led by you.

  4. If we pass someone

Quiet routes are rarely empty. If anyone comes near, we let the conversation rest, naturally and without fuss, and pick it up again once we have the path to ourselves. The same confidentiality applies as in any session.

  5. Whatever the weather

Most weather is no obstacle at all, and some people tell me that walking through a little wind or rain is part of what feels freeing about it. Only genuinely unsafe conditions, such as strong winds, would have us rearrange; otherwise, we walk whatever the day brings.

Why Outdoors

Why walking can help

None of this is magic, and none of it is required, but many people notice that the outdoors changes how a session feels.

Side by side

Without a chair facing yours, some things are easier to say. You can speak, or be quiet, without feeling observed.

Gentle movement

When feelings are hard to sit with, a steady pace can help thoughts begin to move too.

The outdoors itself

Green space, fresh air and birdsong can be quietly grounding. Nature often does some of the settling for us.

Freedom to choose

Walking can be your regular way of working with me, or woven in alongside room-based and online sessions.

And an honest word: Walk & Talk is not for everyone, and it does not need to be. Some people prefer the privacy of a room; many move between the two. We will find out what suits you together, and whatever we decide will be your choice.

Shall we walk?

The easiest way to find out whether Walk & Talk suits you is a short, friendly conversation, with no pressure and no commitment.
